The two places that caught my eye and engaged conversation in Erard’s See Through Words are when he first said “If you say that the brain is a machine, that’s a metaphor that needs no furniture. As soon as they hear it, people will understand that the brain can break, and that it can be fixed.” At first, this made no sense to me. This statement was on my mind for about a day trying to figure it out and I was totally overthinking it but I have never thought of the human body as a metaphor or even furniture. I didn’t think those two things could go together but in this case, it did. I don’t want to break anything and especially my brain even though it can be fixed. The second place that caught my eye and engaged conversation in Erard’s See Through Words is when he said ”At a conceptual level, life is a journey, and arguments are wars: you take sides, there can be only one winner, evidence is a weapon” This caught my eye in a big way because I agree with ”At a conceptual level, life is a journey, and arguments are wars: you take sides” My dad and I argue like its a game, but when he said “there can be only one winner” statement it was hard for me to agree with because I don’t think that in arguments there are ever winners. For me, I usually get mad or by the end, I’m in tears. When I looked up the definition of argument it said “an exchange of diverging or opposite views, typically a heated or angry one.” I don’t think that in an argument there can be a winner but in a conversation, I believe that there can be a winner
